Gulfstream Park’s New Year’s Day Derby opened the east versus west Kentucky Derby Trail debate earlier than usual this year. Looking at the field for Saturday’s Sham at Santa Anita the debate’s all but over. Except for Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Secret Circle the Sham field hardly compares to Saturday’s 7th race at Gulfstream, an OC 75000n1x, let alone the Gulfstream Derby field from New Year’s Day.
