Except for Jaraslav Halak, the Washington Capitals would have won the Stanley Cup. Except for Calvin Borel, Icebox would have won the Kentucky Derby.
Last time I checked itīs the final score or who crosses the finish line first that still counts. Iīve pled my case with the pari-mutuel operators thousands of times, but they donīt care that my horse got boxed in on the rail. Doesnīt matter whether you landed a Triple Lindy or a Quintuple By-pass, thereīs no points for difficulty and no French judges.
I love the Habsī players and sports commentators who talk about Montrealīs system. What system? Having management smart enough to turn a deaf ear to all the hockey experts touting the Halak or Price trades. As long as Halak keeps playing like heīs got a sheet of plywood and the opponents are shooting beachballs, the Habs win. Whenever Halak returns to earth the Habs lose. Thatīs a system?
Wonder if the Habs will ever teach him to score?
Super Saverīs management, aka Todd Pletcher, combined a ready horse with an astute jockey and won the Kentucky Derby. Thatīs all she wrote.

Philīs checked everyone of these pictures. You know which celebrity isnīt there?
Kentucky Derby Celebrity Gallery
"This Derby day, they ran a race called the Pleasant Colony Purse on the undercard. If you quizzed all the vice presidents at Churchill Downs, and there is a closet full, my guess is that most of them would be unable to name the jockey who rode Pleasant Colony to his Derby win in 1981. His name, of course, is Jorge Velasquez, and this Derby found Velasquez in Louisville, as a participant in one of the best promotions in racing, the imprinting in cement of the handprints of many Derby-winning jockeys outside the Galt House Hotel.
Another former Derby winner is Spectacular Bid, in 1979, and somebody tell the executive suite at Churchill that Ron Franklin was his jockey. Franklin, like Velasquez, had also been called to Louisville by organizers of the Galt House handprint ceremony. Before Franklin and Velasquez left town, they had been humiliated by the track where they forged Derby history. There was room at the inn, but not at the Downs, and Franklin and Velasquez watched this Derby from the bar at their hotel. I suppose it didnīt occur to anyone in Churchillīs counting house that it would have been a nice touch, having Jorge Velasquez in the winnerīs circle right after they ran the Pleasant Colony Purse."

Jonathan Huntington was very quick to point out that his recent trip to Kentucky and environs was on his own credit card. Did he get paid for the blogs that were posted? If he did how much per blog? If he did who at Edmonton Northlands or Horse Racing Alberta was supervising to ensure that value was being obtained?
Even though Phil found most of the 9 blogs from Kentucky and environs to be pedantic drivel, Phil was prepared to bite his tongue and say nothing until Phil received a tip to check out Facebook.
What does Phil find on Facebook? Lynn Redl-Huntington giving a thumbs up "likes this" for her own husband. Isnīt that the same Lynn Redl-Huntington who has posted blogs on thehorses.com before? Wonder if she was paid for those postings?
Darren Fish didnīt have his thumbs up and even Huntington, the horse, looked like it was tugging on the lead shank to do a 180 and out.
Do Jonathan Huntington and Lynn Redl-Huntington have any concept of how bush league they made horse racing at Edmonton Northlands, in the city of Edmonton and in the province of Alberta look when a wife gives her husband a thumbs up on her husbandīs blog?
Kind of makes you wonder how many of the supposed hits on thehorses.com website are customers and how many are relatives?
Tuesday morning as the dogs were mushing me to the office a commercial for Sherwood Park Dodge comes on the Sonic airwaves. Sherwood Park Dodge tells you to check their website out where the testimonials are by customers, not relatives. The irony and timing of that commercial have Phil still chuckling.
A couple of the Edmonton area OTBs were giving out Canadian Derby Champagne flutes that would have been sold with drinks at the 2008 Canadian Derby. If the Canadian Derby promotions have been as successful as claimed on thehorses.com why would they have flutes left over?
Kind of makes you wonder if the Canadian Derby promotions have been as successful as portrayed?
Ironically the flutes where honouring Derek G. Milen, Elwin Page and Viking Stablesī Footprint, the 2007 Canadian Derby winner. Real Simard, the venerable Alberta rider who picked up his tack and headed to Fort Erie this year rode Footprint to victory that year.
A couple of years ago Dave Munro of Highfield Stockfarm said we need to improve the professionalism of thoroughbred racing in the province of Alberta.
We certainly do need to improve the professionalism of thoroughbred racing in this province and we should get started sooner not later.

Ricky Walcottīs not starting the 2010 season has been alluded to, but so far none of the way too many managers at HRA or Northlands have had the guts to stand up and tell the Alberta racing public whatīs happening with Ricky Walcott. Heīs not suspended by Horse Racing Alberta or any other racing jurisdiction, so whatīs preventing him from plying his trade at Edmonton Northlands?
Real Simardīs leaving was also alluded to with about as much concern as youīd give a fly on your forehead.
But nary a word has been said about Mike Dimoff, other than that Sugar Shannon Doyle will be calling the thoroughbreds at Northlands in 2010.
If youīre one of the loyal few who head on down to the Awards dinner, youīll get a last chance to hear Mike Dimoff calling the races when they show the replays.
