North American thoroughbred racing pines for the next Triple Crown winner. To keep proper perspective thoroughbred racing need look no further than the home of Arlington Park, where the National League team that plays on the north side, the Chicago Cubs, haven´t won a World Series in over a century.

1908 was the last year the Chicago Cubs won the World Series.

Since then:

The New York Yankees have won the World Series 27 times.

The Boston Red Sox have won the World Series 6 times, finally overcoming the curse of the Bambino after 86 years without a World Series

The White Sox, the Cubs cross town rivals, have won 2 World Series, finally overcoming the Black Sox scandal after 88 years without a World Series

The NHL evolved and the Chicago Blackhawks have won 3 Stanley Cups.

The Edmonton Oilers have won 5 Stanley Cups

The Calgary Flames have won a Stanley Cup

The Vancouver Canucks have won 0 Stanley Cups

The Vancouver Millionaires won the Stanley Cup in 1915, before the NHL evolved.

Radio was invented.

Television was invented.

Al Gore invented the Internet.

The US went through Prohibition and the Great Depression.

The world was engulfed in two world wars and many major armed conflicts

The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The NFL was founded and the Chicago Bears won the Superbowl

Man landed on the moon.

Harry Carey was born and died.

Wrigley Field was built and is now the oldest baseball park in the National League.

Five flag poles, erected at Wrigley Field for the purpose of holding a World Series flag, have worn out and been replaced without ever holding a pennant.

Lights were installed at major league baseball stadiums, the last being Wrigley Field.

Halley´s Comet passed the earth twice.

Hundreds of boys were born, raised, played inept baseball for the Cubs, retired and died of old age.

Normally, being mentioned in the same breath as the LA Dodgers would be another feather in Zenyatta´s Yankee Doodle Dandy cap, but she may have to be more than a one trick pony as the hardest strikes in the Dodgers camp this year are being fired from the warring camps in the McCourt´s acrimonious divorce action.

Nt Times: The Rail - Zenyatta is a Dodger

Zenyatta´s record is perfect and with the current edition of the Dodgers being more miss than hit I´m sure it will be scant days before she´s calling Put Me In Coach.

Zenyatta´s not the first thoroughbred in baseball.

On the first day of Spring Training at Yankee Stadium, a scout brings a race horse with him to tryouts.

The manager asks, "What the heck did you bring that horse here for?"

The scout replies, "Wait until you see him hit."

All the players are laughing, until the horse comes to bat. The horse grabs the bat, saddles up to the plate and everyone quiets down.

They stare at the horse.

The pitcher shrugs his shoulders, rears back and fires a rocket toward home plate. Astonishingly, the horse hits the ball deep into the outfield.

The horse stands there and does not move. The manager yells at the baseball scout to tell the horse to run to first base.

The scout looks at the manager and yells back, "If he could run, he´d be at Belmont!"

Phil looks at Desormeaux´s ride in the Derby lane through different glasses. The memories of Eight Belles and Barbaro are pretty fresh in most people´s mind. Would Desormeaux whipping Paddy O´Prado 50 or 60 times coming down the lane have been the image thoroughbred racing wanted on TV? Not on your life.

I also find it intriguing that most of the handicappers who are bitching at Desormeaux claim he´s got a reputation for easing off on horses down the lane. Well, if you´re so smart to think he has that reputation, then what in the hell are you doing using him on the second line of your exactors, tris and supers?

Edgar Allen Poe spent much of his poetic career in Baltimore. When the NFL gave Baltimore a new team to replace the Colts who had pulled a midnight move under Robert Isray, the people of Baltimore must have wanted to recognize one of their more famous citizens. Thus, Phil opines the Ravens were named in honour of Poe´s masterpiece.

Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou," I said, "art sure no craven,

Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the Nightly shore

Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night´s Plutonian shore!"

Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."
