Wild Of The Call

Joe Torre must have brought Zenyatta to the locker room to have a chat with the boys of summer as the Dodgers have been on a tear winning 9 in a row, before falling to the Padres on Wednesday.

Hardy McGill will be taking over as VP of Racing and Gaming at Edmonton Northlands. Donīt know much about Hardyīs background except that he was once head of Investigations for Alberta Gaming and Liquor.

As one of Philīs readers said. Maybe the HPHR can give Hardy the task of using his investigative skills to find out where all the fans and their dollars have disappeared to.

____________

When Sugar Shannon Doyle replaced Mike Dimoff as thoroughbred caller, Phil was prepared to give him a chance. After fielding a number of e-mails that were rather uncomplimentary to Sugarīs calling for the first weekend, Phil put on his sleuth cap and listened to a number of replays. Far worse than I ever expected and the calls did not improve over the course of the weekend.

Phil would have been satisfied with Bush League.

How much research was performed on Sugarīs ability to call thoroughbred races before the decision to hire him was made? Who schooled him on thoroughbred racing? Is this a diabolical plan to destroy thoroughbred racing in this province so the jiggies can take over? Whatīs Plan B?

Would you buy Northlands thoroughbred simulcast signal if you heard Sugarīs calls from last weekend?

If I was CEO of an organization thatīs fighting for the rights to operate the new downtown arena in Edmonton Iīd ensure that every facet of my organizationīs operation reflected positively on the city.

After blowing his own horn about the 3% increase in live handle for Fridayīs opening night the shill hit the mute button about the handle for the rest of the weekend.

Before Phil was banned from Northlands Park he made a comment that the Butler should put up his salary to back his claim that the 2008 handle would average $300k a day. Iīm sure that comment was one of the reasons that Phil became persona non grata.

The handle never averaged $300K a day that year and has continued its slide down the slippery precipice.

If things continue the same way as opening weekend at Northlands they´ll be lucky to average $200K a day. That would be a drop of 33%.

Iīm sure that opening another OTB in the Beverly Crest will do wonders for the handle. Just rearranging the deck chairs on the goodship Titanic.

As Albert Einstein said: Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
