All quiet on the Balzac front does not necessarily bode well for horse racing in Alberta.
At last week´s CCAA hearing in Calgary one of the creditors made a proposal to buy out all of the other creditors and be the only mortgagee.
That offer comes with some strings attached. HRA will have to write off interest on its $2.5 million mortgage. And a couple of the other creditors will have to take big hits.
No mention was made of any return to any of the investors in UHA.
The hearing was adjourned to June 4, 2010, 8:45 AM to allow the participants to follow the strings.
If this proposal is not accepted, a motion by one of the mortgage holders to proceed with their foreclosure will be heard 1 PM on July 9, 2010.
Neither the proposal nor the mortgage foreclosure guarantee that the race track will proceed soon or at all. All they guarantee is some resolution of the debt status of UHA.

Frucher: Well, let´s recognize I´m doing this pro bono. I´m doing this to avoid a disaster to the state. I don´t have any fat in the fire. I´m just looking at it objectively. This industry is blessed with a public policy in New York state that says, "These failed businesses, because they are failed businesses, they cannot operate on their own and make a profit on their own in New York state, need an additional public subsidy," i.e., the awarding of franchises to run the only legal casinos in New York state, at these tracks. Now that clearly was a public policy that said, "Let´s consolidate gambling in New York state, at the tracks, for the purposes of sustaining this industry." If it was, "Let´s have gambling to get money for the public purse, the public treasury" … then you would put them at more strategic locations like in the middle of Manhattan. So clearly, that´s designed as a subsidy for the industry. That all needs to be looked at in context.

The Boston Celtics dug deep and eliminated Wince Carter and the Magic in the 6th game on Friday. Wasn´t that the Celtics didn´t want to be the first team in NBA history to lose a series after leading 3-0.
