With the last leg of the Triple Crown run, the Breeders´ Cup still months away and Edmonton Northlands completely destroying Phil´s interest in Northlands´ thoroughbred racing, Phil won´t be posting as often. Probably once a week for the next few months, either Friday, Sunday or Monday.
From the looks of Northland´s handle this year, $151,329 Saturday, Phil´s not the only one who has lost interest in thoroughbred racing in the Province of Alberta.

"NHL television ratings have bounced back from the post-lockout doldrums -- and way beyond.
The clincher of the Stanley Cup finals was the most-watched and highest-rated NHL game in 36 years. The Chicago Blackhawks´ 4-3 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 6, which earned them their first championship since 1961, drew a 4.7 rating and 8 share Wednesday night on NBC."

A Nonissue:
The Age of the Patrons. It is said frequently that racing has been unable to attract the computer age people: Generation X or Y. Why aren´t there younger faces in the crowd like there are at Saratoga or Del Mar? The short answer is that horse racing has always appealed to an older demographic. For decades, people have been complaining that there are no young fans at the tracks. The fact is there almost never were any young fans at the track. Horse racing is not likely to appeal to Gen Y. Horse racing´s problem is that baby boomers — who should now be at the right age to go to the track — are not going to the track. There are more senior citizens in the U.S. than ever before. There will be even more in the next two decades. Racing´s problem is that they´re going to casinos and playing the lottery instead of going to the track.
Racing has never been a young person´s sport. The problem is why the baby boomers are not going to the track and what can be done to get baby boomers to go there.

BC Horse Racing Committee´s Commitment To Transparency
While the Committee is trying very hard to be fully transparent with the industry, so as to overcome the mistrust and consistent rumours that plague the industry, it appears that this transparency and communication isn´t extending to people in the industry. I continue to receive calls and emails from industry participants complaining of the same things i.e.:
"Today I was informed that again there would be another purse cut due to falling revenues. I was told by numerous people that the numbers just do not add up. The mood at the racetrack this morning was that of despair. Many small time owners as myself will no longer purchase any more horses until there is transparency and disclosure. No where can I find a set of numbers that I can see to draw my own conclusions from. There are no minutes from the "committee meetings". There are no minutes or numbers from your office nor anything published from the track operator. The whole system has now become a secret society. Please advise me where I can find a set of numbers that outlines where all the revenue comes from as well as where the shortfalls are."
As you know, this information is provided to industry both through Committee letters to yourselves and then through the link to this information and these letters on the GPEB website provided to you in the Committee´s May 12, 2010 letter (i.e. BC Horse Racing Revitalization http://www.hsd.gov.bc.ca/gaming/horse-racing/revitalization.htm). However, the Committee doesn´t interact daily with industry participants as you do and so I am requesting that you make every effort to pass this information along to your members and all industry participants in as many ways as possible as soon as this information is made available (e.g. posted at the tracks and in the backstretch, posted on your organizations´ websites, include the GPEB website link on your websites, distribute Committee letters to your membership, word-of-mouth, association newsletters/communications, etc.).
The mistrust and despair expressed in the letter above is felt by everyone in the industry in these difficult times and it is our responsibility, collectively, to communicate clearly and often with industry participants so that we can attempt to inform them as fully as ourselves and hopefully alleviate some of their concerns.
Thank you
Chris Curtis
