Polishing Sharks' Image

While Big Red Mike and the Queen hogged the spotlight at Woodbine on Sunday, Richard Bonnycastle´s Harlequin Ranches´ and Partners´ Spice Route closed on the million mark with his victory in the Singspiel scant days after the race´s namesake succumbed to laminitis.

What does a $58,818 Canada Day handle on 6 races at Millarville compared to an $18,374 handle on 9 jiggie races at Alberta Downs say?

Something that the HPHR and HRA just don´t seem to get.

Alberta racing fans prefer flat racing, thoroughbreds and quarterhorses.

Let´s build on what the few remaining fans want.

Simulcast wagering has rearranged the shape of horse racing, raising this downbeat, but prudent question

Why go to the track? Live-meet attendance is good at the more scenic locations where horse racing includes some spa-type action, bonus vacation time at somewhere like Del Mar, Hot Springs or Saratoga. Where the wire meets the tire, where the interstate is the most notable nearby feature, simulcast halls are frequently more comfortable than hanging over the rail. The only attendance-type figures that really matter are the numbers that come from tellers attending to money, no matter where it is put down. Even though there might be more people in the barns than in the grandstand at live meets, it´s the numbers on the tote that matter.
